This is a new project featuring an unlikely subject for photographs — the automatic pinsetting machine.
Lately, I've been thinking about those curious machines that spend most of their lives hidden from our view. I bet most recreational bowlers, and even many league bowlers, have never seen one up close. They are marvels of engineering and fascinating beasts to watch.
Many machines are 50 or 60 years old, and the best-maintained ones work as well today as they did on day one.
