Bowling’s colorful history includes an era when lanes were installed in mansions, estates and resorts for the enjoyment of the affluent and famous. Lanes still exist in many private residences and summer retreats, where they have enjoyed equal status with tennis courts, croquet lawns, boat houses and other amenities. These photographs show several sites in New York where historic lanes can still be found, lovingly preserved. Also pictured here is the single lane at Roseland Cottage in Woodstock, Connecticut — widely believed to be the oldest surviving bowling lane in the US.
